To do this in Outlook, right-click over the Junk folder and select Properties from the menu that appears. If this is what's happening, then realistically your best course of action is to do nothing at all. Just leave the spam messages in the Junk folder, don't delete them, don't even acknowledge them, and let the program deal with them in its own time. A message in the Trash folder is something that is safe and that once had importance to you (whether minor or major) but now no longer does and thus has been placed on a sort of virtual chopping block by being moved to the Trash folder - no longer needed but still not "unwanted" in the same way spam is, if you will. A spam message is an "unwanted" message - something you did not ask to receive and has no importance to you - and may even be harmful. Keep in mind that there is a big difference between a spam email and an email that has been moved to your Trash folder. However, in some installations of Outlook, particularly on Macs, this setting gets confused and when you delete a spam email ahead of the preset 30 day time limit the program gets confused and moves the message to the Trash folder instead, believing you may want to keep it.
